Biological Injections

Biologic injections, such as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, are a type of regenerative treatment increasingly used to help relieve pain and improve healing in conditions like osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal issues. Here’s an overview to help you understand how it works and what to expect:

What is PRP Therapy?

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses your own blood to help promote healing. Blood contains platelets, which are rich in growth factors that can help reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and stimulate tissue repair.
  • During a PRP treatment, a small amount of blood is drawn from your arm, and it's then spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. This concentrated solution, or “PRP,” is injected directly into the affected joint or tissue.

How Does PRP Help with Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Conditions?

  • PRP is believed to help reduce inflammation, which is often a major source of pain in osteoarthritis and tendon injuries.
  • The growth factors in PRP may promote healing in damaged tissues, including cartilage and tendons. For osteoarthritis, this means it may help improve joint function and reduce pain by aiding in the health of the joint cartilage.

Benefits of PRP Therapy

  • Pain Relief: Many patients report decreased pain in the treated joint after a series of PRP injections.
  • Improved Joint Function: By reducing inflammation and supporting tissue health, PRP may improve joint movement.
  • Less Invasive: Since PRP is derived from your own blood, it is generally considered safe and has fewer risks than surgery.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

  •  PRP therapy is usually an outpatient procedure and only takes about an hour.
  • After the injection, you might experience some initial soreness or swelling, which generally resolves within a few days.
  • For best results, a series of injections may be recommended over several months.

Is PRP Right for Everyone?

  • PRP is most effective for mild to moderate osteoarthritis and soft tissue injuries, such as tendinitis or partial tendon tears.
  • It may not be as effective for severe osteoarthritis where the cartilage is significantly worn away.
  • Talk with your healthcare provider to see if PRP is a good option based on your condition and overall health.

Safety and Risks

  • PRP is generally safe, with minimal risk since it uses your own blood. Possible side effects include temporary pain or inflammation at the injection site.
  • Like any procedure, there's a small risk of infection or adverse reaction, but this is rare.
